For nearly ten years, a broad-based coalition has led the charge for conservation in Doña Ana County. On May 21, 2014, President Obama established the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.
On April 26, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order attempting to eliminate or shrink monuments that have been protected by our presidents in recent decades, including the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument in New Mexico. The executive order puts the fate of these monuments in the hands of Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke. The 60-day comment period for the national monument review closed on July 10, 2017, more than 97,000 comments were received supporting New Mexico’s national monuments. Our local elected officials agree that Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument is an economic engine for our local communities. In the last 60 days the Doña Ana County Commission, City of Las Cruces, Town of Mesilla, City of Anthony passed formal resolutions in support of the monument.
